Waldviertel Railway Cycle Trail
GMÜND – GROSS GERUNGS – GMÜND
The Waldviertel Railway Cycle Trail, named after the popular narrow-gauge railway, connects the towns of Gmünd and Groß Gerungs. The tour is so named because it constantly crosses the Waldviertel Railway. It is family-friendly and offers an abundance of wonderful views.
This well-marked cycle trail runs through the classic Waldviertel landscape, past impressive granite blocks, through glorious valley landscapes, along the Lainsitz river, across the European watershed near Bruderndorf and past Semmering. It is well worth stopping off in Weitra, the oldest brewery town in Austria. Here, like in many other places en route, you can recharge your batteries for the journey ahead in typical Waldviertel taverns.
The route is well signposted in both directions and both Groß Gerungs and Gmünd can be chosen as starting points. It’s possible to board the Waldviertel Railway at all stations. This means you can do stretches of the trail on the Waldviertel Railway – perfect for a short cycling excursion.
Worthwhile destinations:
Blockheide nature reserve near Gmünd, Weitra town and castle, the Sonnseitn alpaca farm in Abschlag, the bison ranch in Langschlag and the Groß Gerungs power arena
Info: Bike transportation and reservation are free of charge!
